Set off aboard Le Champlain for an 11-day cruise and enjoy an exceptional experience exploring Norway in the winter. From Tromso, you will sail towards these magical lands, where your exceptional itinerary will take in snow-capped summits, immaculate landscapes and the discovery of millennial traditions.
Throughout your journey, you will benefit from an excursion included per person per port of call, to choose from a selection offered by PONANT. During this cruise, set off to discover the legendary Nordkapp, or the North Cape, from Honningsvag, appreciate the charm of the Lofoten Islands during a day of visits from Reine, or explore Tromso, the capital of the Arctic, in a rigid-inflatable boat. The beginning of this trip beyond the Arctic Circle will be marked by an immersion in the land of the Sami. From your disembarkation in Narvik, in the very heart of captivating summits plunging into the sumptuous Ofotfjord, you will be invited to explore the ancestral tales of this reindeer-herding indigenous people.
Your ship will then make its way south where you will witness the mysterious charm of the Lofoten archipelago. These islands have landscapes of surreal beauty alternating between sea, spectacular fjords, mountain slopes and bright-coloured huts on stilts.
Le Champlain will set sail for Hammerfest, the northernmost town in the world. During your port of call in this charming fishing port, you will have the opportunity to explore the Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of triangulations stretching from Norway to the Black Sea, and the first technical and scientific tool to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You will also sail by Bear Island, halfway between the North Cape of Norway and the South Cape of Spitsbergen. From your ship, you will marvel at this small strip of land with its craggy coastline and high jagged cliffs.
Le Champlain will once again set sail south, for the captivating Honningsvag. This port of call will take you to the northernmost point of Europe: the North Cape. On this cliff, home to the emblematic Milestone, a globe-shaped monument, allow yourself the time to dream as you gaze upon the vastness of the Barents Sea.
You will then discover Alta. In the polar night, you may be lucky enough to admire the unique colours of the Northern Lights as they ripple and spin above the Arctic Circle.
Your trip into the very heart of the immenseness of the Norwegian Arctic polar world will end in Tromso, your disembarkation port.

Conserved in an immaculate natural setting, this charming fishing port enjoys a rich history, as is evidenced by various vestiges dating back to the Stone Age, Napoleonic wars or the Second World War. During your port of call, you will have the opportunity to discover the Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of triangulations stretching across Europe from Hammerfest to the Black Sea, and the first technical and scientific object to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Halfway between Norway and Spitsbergen, you will sail not far from the coastlines of Bjørnøya, the southernmost island of Svalbard. From your ship, observe this isolated piece of land discovered in 1596 by the Dutch navigator Willem Barents, then looking for the Northwest Passage. Following a tough fight between a polar bear and the members of the expedition, he dubbed the place Bear Island. Regularly covered by a thick layer of fog, Bjørnøya shelters a meteorological station built in 1923, which is still in operation. Declared a nature reserve in 2002, the island is above all home to an enormous colony of sea birds: skuas, guillemots, puffins, Tridactyl gulls, petrels, gulls and little auks all coexist here.

If you feel like you have arrived at the end of the world in Honningsvåg, it is because this is the case. Halfway between Oslo and the North Pole, it competes with Hammerfest for the status of “the northernmost town in Continental Europe”. Colourful houses light up this charming and typically Norwegian fishing port nestled in the hollows of the region’s mountainous terrain. Travellers come to stay in the village to go to the North Cape. At the end of the road, you will see the globe that indicates that you are at the very end of Europe. At this point, only the Svalbard archipelago separates you from the North Pole. There is sea as far as the eye can see. The Northern Lights, the view of the immense cliff plunging into the sea, the thousands of puffins, gannets and cormorants that spin around you: everything here is grandiose.

Ofoten Railway & Sweden
From the pier, board your coach for a short transfer to the Narvik train station. From here, you will board your train for a 1-hour trip to Sweden. The Ofoten Railway is the historic line that has connected the ore-rich mines of Kiruna in Sweden to the ice-free port of Narvik.
Enjoy sweeping views of frozen lakes and snow-capped mountains. On your way, you will quickly understand the terrible routine of the “navvies,” or itinerant laborers, who built this line under extremely harsh conditions. You will pass by some important battle locations that took place during World War II. Observe the breathtaking scenery across the southern cliffs to towering Bjørnfjell, which stands 2510 feet (760 meters) above sea level.
Upon arrival in Björkliden, you will enjoy a snack and have some free time to take a stroll and get some souvenirs in this ski-resort municipality.
Finally, you will board your awaiting coach for your return journey with a slightly different perspective.

Travel across Norway’s scenic winter landscapes for a visit to the impressive Polar Park. Located at the 69° northern latitude, this reserve is the northernmost wildlife park in the world. The park is home to a large variety of Arctic mammals, including wolf, lynx, wolverine, mush oxen, elk, reindeer, mountain fox and badger.
From the pier, embark on a picturesque journey by coach from Narvik to the park. You will cross the 2,500-foot-long Rombak Bridge and continue along the Herjansfjord before heading inland through the birch tree forests of the Gratangs Valley.
At Polar Park, you will be able to walk along a 2½-mile-long asphalt path that will allow you to observe the animals in their enclosures. The living spaces are large—the park boasts the world’s biggest area-per-animal ratio—so be patient and keep watch for the inhabitants.
Then, you will enjoy a light lunch at the park before returning to your ship.

Depending on the temperatures and amount of snow that falls, the grounds may be slippery or even pure ice! This tour involves to walk uphill and downhill, on partly uneven grounds with gravel and maybe snow, depending on the weather. This excursion is very strenuous and requires to walk, at least, 1.2 mile (2 km). Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

From the pier, embark your coach and head to the village of Borg.
Upon arrival, enjoy a visit to the Lofotr Museum. Here at Borg, archaeologists have found a chieftain’s farmstead with sensational objects bearing witness to a centre of power during the Viking period. The main house is the largest Viking building ever discovered, measuring 83 metres long and 9 metres high (270 and 30 feet). A copy has been built next to the excavation ground and you will feel as if you were transported back to the year 900, whilst farm animals are grazing peacefully outside.
Then, get back to your coach and head to Flakstad Island for a photostop at the Flakstad church built in 1780, a red little church made of driftwood, believed to have come from Siberia.
Enjoy the drive back to Reine, on charming Lofoten roads.

Spend a leisurely day learning about the maritime history of the Lofoten Islands. Discover the architecture of the fishermen's dwellings, which today serve as popular holiday homes for visitors who want to take part in the region's many outdoor activities.
From the pier, embark your coach for a scenic drive to Å. This village is an open-air museum, representing the Lofoten's fisheries and displays 150 year old coastal building environments. Upon arrival, you will be free to discover the village at your own pace for 30 minutes
Continue your scenic drive to Flakstad Bay to explore the charming 18th-century red church. It is the second oldest church in Lofoten and built in the shape of a cross.
Then, you will take the direction of Sund to visit the interesting Fishery Museum and Smithy. The museum was originally established in 1964, in the idea of a unique and lively museum, depicting the history of boats and fishing equipment. You will be able to take a closer look at the blacksmith at work, perhaps creating a cormorant, an important fishermen's symbol. Discover various objects including boats, utensils from fishermen's homes and working boat engines, from the beginning of this century.
Reboard the coach and return to Reine.

Enjoy a panoramic tour through Hammerfest and a visit to the unique Polar Bear Club on this tour that aims to give you a glimpse of the town's most notable sights.
Hammerfest is the northernmost town in the world, and although it is covered in darkness from November to January, it enjoys a legendary midnight sun during the summer months. A small but modern town, the main industries have long been fishing and trade. Today, it has also become the central point for the petroleum industry in Northern Norway.
Boarding your coach at the pier, you will set off on a drive through this intriguing town. Along the way, you may spot reindeer in the meadows of the Finnmark Mountain Plains. A photo stop will be made en route to fully enjoy the views of this unique landscape.
As your coach travels through the suburbs, you will see many homes that were built after the town was destroyed during World War II and another photo stop will be made at Forsol, a tiny, yet charming, fishing village. From here, you will continue on to Mount Salen, which offers up breathtaking views over the town, the fjord and the surrounding islands.
Making your way back to the town centre, you will pass the Museum of Reconstruction and Hammerfest Church before stopping at the Central Marketplace to visit the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society, which is located at the Town Hall. The Society was founded in 1963 with a goal of preserving Hammerfest and its proud traditions as a base for hunting and fishing in Artic waters. Take time to browse through the collection of stuffed animals and native artefacts before re-boarding your coach for the drive back to the pier.

Gain a thorough understanding of the history of Hammerfest during this tour that visits the Museum of Reconstruction.
Your tour commences with a scenic coach drive through the streets of Hammerfest, the world's northernmost town. Also known as the Hiroshima of Europe, Hammerfest was reconstructed after World War II, when the town was completely destroyed by fire during the withdrawal of the German troops in Finnmark County. Sadly, only the tiny chapel in the graveyard remained.
Adjacent to the Hammerfest Church resides the newly erected Museum of Reconstruction, where you will enjoy a visit inside the museum. This inspirational museum aims to show human determination to conquer and overcome the destruction created by war and create a new future. The exhibitions give visitors an inside look at the life and culture of Finnmark County before the war, the living conditions of refugees and the optimism that characterized the reconstruction years after the war.
Following your visit to the museum, you will re-join your coach for a short ride towards Salen, where you will be treated with views towards the town and surrounding islands.
From here, you will transfer back to the pier where your tour will conclude.

Take in glorious vistas along Europe’s far northern shores and enjoy an independent visit at Nordkapp (North Cape).
You will meet your coach at our berth and transfer approximately one hour to one of Europe’s most stunning natural sights. Located on the reaches of Magerøya Island, where the Norwegian and Barents Seas meet, the cliffs of Nordkapp rise more than 1,000 feet from the sea and are topped by a large, flat plateau.
Upon arrival, you will have time to take in the spectacular vista of barren tundra. You will also have a chance to visit the North Cape Hall, which chronicles the history of the region. Spend time on your own, perhaps visiting the small ecumenical St. John’s Chapel. An excellent film at the visitors’ centre depicts the region through the seasons. Or, if you prefer, simply find yourself the perfect overlook and ponder your journey.

Take a glimpse of the region’s rich fishing heritage and learn how it has prospered from its relationship with the sea.
You will drive through Honningsvåg to the most scenic fishing village on Magerøya Island, beautifully nestled at the head of a narrow fjord. This pretty hamlet is home to the “Gallery East of the Sun,” which exhibits art, handicrafts, and books, all inspired by the island and its ever-changing seasons. The artist will welcome you and explain her unusual works. Afterwards, stroll with your guide around the typical fishing wharf and explore on your own.
Your next stop will be the tiny village of Sarnes, where you will enjoy coffee in a lavvo, a traditional structure of the indigenous Sami people. Hear about the king crabs that thrive in these waters, which reach up to six feet in length and weigh as much as 22 pounds.
Then, you will return to your ship.

From the pier, embark on a 1 ¼ hour journey by coach to Máze, a Sami village located on the outskirts of Alta.
The Sami’s roots in Arctic Europe trace back at least 5,000 years. Descendants of nomadic people, they moved depending on their country geopolitic and finished to be confined in the northern extremity of the country. They belong to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic family, and are mostly represented in Lapland and adjacent areas of Northern Norway, Sweden and Finland. Learn about the vibrant culture of indigenous Norwegians during your visit.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your hosts, members of a reindeer-herding family. You will have the opportunity to climb on board a reindeer-pulled sled for a picturesque ride along a frozen river. Relax as you glide along to the sound of reindeer bells and snow crunching under hooves.
After your ride, return to the village, where you will be invited into a large traditional tent called a lavvu. Take a seat next to a roaring fire and taste traditional specialities while your hosts entertain you with stories of Sami traditions and modern life. Later, you will return to your ship.

Your evening experience will start onboard! Your northern lights expert, Trygve will meet you on board the ship, where he will explain the northern lights phenomenon, as well as providing advices on the best camera settings needed to photograph the lights. The hard work of planning has already been done by your expert, by monitoring the skies and the northern lights forecast beforehand to ensure that you will be at the very best location to observe the sky.
Then, board your local coach and head to your observation spot. On location, the anticipation of spotting the lights is all part of the fun, and your eyes are bound to be glued to the sky as you wait for them to show. Trygve has many years of experience, and his sighting rate is an incredible 95%, so if the lights are visible, he should know where to find them. If you are lucky, the vivid colours will certainly amaze you. In fact words cannot do them justice; you really have to see them for yourself! All the camps are situated near warm facilities or ‘Lavvu’s’, where you can enjoy hot drinks whilst you wait for those magical lights.

Tromsø, the capital of the North is located on Troms, an island covered with forests. It is also called "the gateway to the Arctic", since it used to be the headquarter of seal and walrus hunters, and the starting point for several Arctic expeditions.
From the pier, board your coach for a tour of this charming city and proceed to the Science Centre of Northern Norway. Here, you will sit and lean back in the comfortable chairs of the planetarium to watch the beautiful film "Experience the Aurora". During the 25-minute show, you will learn everything about the illusive Northern Lights with most of the footage shot in the Tromsø region.
After the visit, depart to the Polar Museum. The museum is located in the old Custom House. It is closely linked with the Arctic Association which aims to preserve records from bygone times, when Tromsø was a major base for hunting and expeditions on a larger scale. The museum also shows a great part of the equipment, skis, tents etc. that the explorer Roald Amundsen used on his South Pole expedition.
Next, re-board your coach and drive to the Arctic Cathedral passing the famous Tromsø Bridge. From the pier, board your coach for a short transfer to the Narvik train station. From here, you will board your train for a 1-hour trip to Sweden. The Ofoten Railway is the historic line that has connected the ore-rich mines of Kiruna in Sweden to the ice-free port of Narvik.
Enjoy sweeping views of frozen lakes and snow-capped mountains. On your way, you will quickly understand the terrible routine of the “navvies,” or itinerant laborers, who built this line under extremely harsh conditions. You will pass by some important battle locations that took place during World War II. Observe the breathtaking scenery across the southern cliffs to towering Bjørnfjell, which stands 2510 feet (760 meters) above sea level.
Upon arrival in Björkliden, you will enjoy a snack and have some free time to take a stroll and get some souvenirs in this ski-resort municipality.

Travel across Norway’s scenic winter landscapes for a visit to the impressive Polar Park. Located at the 69° northern latitude, this reserve is the northernmost wildlife park in the world. The park is home to a large variety of Arctic mammals, including wolf, lynx, wolverine, mush oxen, elk, reindeer, mountain fox and badger.
From the pier, embark on a picturesque journey by coach from Narvik to the park. You will cross the 2,500-foot-long Rombak Bridge and continue along the Herjansfjord before heading inland through the birch tree forests of the Gratangs Valley.
At Polar Park, you will be able to walk along a 2½-mile-long asphalt path that will allow you to observe the animals in their enclosures. The living spaces are large—the park boasts the world’s biggest area-per-animal ratio—so be patient and keep watch for the inhabitants.
Then, you will enjoy a light lunch at the park before returning to your ship.

From the pier, embark your coach and head to the village of Borg.
Upon arrival, enjoy a visit to the Lofotr Museum. Here at Borg, archaeologists have found a chieftain’s farmstead with sensational objects bearing witness to a centre of power during the Viking period. The main house is the largest Viking building ever discovered, measuring 83 metres long and 9 metres high (270 and 30 feet). A copy has been built next to the excavation ground and you will feel as if you were transported back to the year 900, whilst farm animals are grazing peacefully outside.
Then, get back to your coach and head to Flakstad Island for a photostop at the Flakstad church built in 1780, a red little church made of driftwood, believed to have come from Siberia.

From the pier, embark your coach for a scenic drive to Å. This village is an open-air museum, representing the Lofoten's fisheries and displays 150 year old coastal building environments. Upon arrival, you will be free to discover the village at your own pace for 30 minutes
Continue your scenic drive to Flakstad Bay to explore the charming 18th-century red church. It is the second oldest church in Lofoten and built in the shape of a cross.
Then, you will take the direction of Sund to visit the interesting Fishery Museum and Smithy. The museum was originally established in 1964, in the idea of a unique and lively museum, depicting the history of boats and fishing equipment. You will be able to take a closer look at the blacksmith at work, perhaps creating a cormorant, an important fishermen's symbol. Hammerfest is the northernmost town in the world, and although it is covered in darkness from November to January, it enjoys a legendary midnight sun during the summer months. Boarding your coach at the pier, you will set off on a drive through this intriguing town. Along the way, you may spot reindeer in the meadows of the Finnmark Mountain Plains. A photo stop will be made en route to fully enjoy the views of this unique landscape.

Gain a thorough understanding of the history of Hammerfest during this tour that visits the Museum of Reconstruction.
Your tour commences with a scenic coach drive through the streets of Hammerfest, the world's northernmost town. Also known as the Hiroshima of Europe, Hammerfest was reconstructed after World War II, when the town was completely destroyed by fire during the withdrawal of the German troops in Finnmark County. Sadly, only the tiny chapel in the graveyard remained.
Adjacent to the Hammerfest Church resides the newly erected Museum of Reconstruction, where you will enjoy a visit inside the museum. This inspirational museum aims to show human determination to conquer and overcome the destruction created by war and create a new future. Located on the reaches of Magerøya Island, where the Norwegian and Barents Seas meet, the cliffs of Nordkapp rise more than 1,000 feet from the sea and are topped by a large, flat plateau.

You will drive through Honningsvåg to the most scenic fishing village on Magerøya Island, beautifully nestled at the head of a narrow fjord. This pretty hamlet is home to the “Gallery East of the Sun,” which exhibits art, handicrafts, and books, all inspired by the island and its ever-changing seasons. The artist will welcome you and explain her unusual works. Afterwards, stroll with your guide around the typical fishing wharf and explore on your own.

The Sami’s roots in Arctic Europe trace back at least 5,000 years. Your evening experience will start onboard! Your northern lights expert, Trygve will meet you on board the ship, where he will explain the northern lights phenomenon, as well as providing advices on the best camera settings needed to photograph the lights. The hard work of planning has already been done by your expert, by monitoring the skies and the northern lights forecast beforehand to ensure that you will be at the very best location to observe the sky.
Then, board your local coach and head to your observation spot. On location, the anticipation of spotting the lights is all part of the fun, and your eyes are bound to be glued to the sky as you wait for them to show. Trygve has many years of experience, and his sighting rate is an incredible 95%, so if the lights are visible, he should know where to find them. If you are lucky, the vivid colours will certainly amaze you. In fact words cannot do them justice; you really have to see them for yourself! All the camps are situated near warm facilities or ‘Lavvu’s’, where you can enjoy hot drinks whilst you wait for those magical lights.

Day 1 - Tromso / Bjørkliden
After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at the port by our local representative.
You will be drive from Tromso through the Norvegian countryside to reach the Polar Park for a three hour drive. Polar Park is located at 75-km (47 miles) north of Narvik in the town of Bardu, your gateway to Norway’s wild expanses, with large areas offering a habitat that is as natural as possible for the animals.
You will have lunch en route in a local restaurant on the road.
After lunch, continue your route until the Polar Park. Visit this reserve, the worlds northernmost animal park, which home to native Arctic animals including bears, wolves, and lynxes as well as deer, moose, reindeer and musk oxen. .
You will then be transferred to the village station of Bjørkliden. Check-in your room at Hotel Fjället 4*.

Day 2 - Bjørkliden / Kiruna
After breakfast, you will be driven during a 1 hour and half-drive for Reindeer sleding site (Nutti Sami).
At your arrival, experience traditional Sámi lifestyle and the art of reindeer sledding with your dedicated guide. Help train, feed and race reindeer while learning about the importance these beautiful animals have to the Sámi way of life. To get out to our herd, we go through the winter forests with snowmobiles and sledges. Once in place, you get to try racing a reindeer sleigh on a 200 meter long track, a traditional sport up here. After the tour, we gather in our lávvu tent, to warm up and taste traditional Sámi food. While your guide is preparing the lunch there is lots of time for interesting conversations and questions about the local lifestyle.
The afternoon will be focused on discovering the famous Icehotel which is located 200-km (124-miles) north of the Arctic Circle. You will be able to discover the incredible ice sculptures that have earned this hotel’s reputation all over the world. Dinner included.

Day 3 - Kiruna / Lulea
After breakfast, you will take the train to Lulea (a journey of around 4 hours).
On arrival, you will have lunch in a local restaurant and then head to your hotel Clarion Sense 4* for check-in.

Day 4 - Lulea
After breakfast, you will set off to meet the Sámi of Sweden, who are one of the world’s last indigenous peoples, with their own language and culture. You will enjoy talking with them about their traditions and their way of life, which are very closely connected to nature. It will be a particularly enriching moment during which you will learn all about the heritage of this people, a heritage that these days can still be found in Lapland’s architecture, contemporary art and culinary traditions. For centuries, the Sámi have built their way of life around reindeer breeding and herding; the reindeer are bred mainly for their antlers, fur and milk. The Sámi are also renowned for their traditional handicraft, known as Duodji, which has been passed down for generations.
Thanks to this activity, you will enjoy a genuine experience of the life of the Sámi and their day-to-day in Swedish Lapland. You will drink freshly boiled coffee around the fire in a lavvu (Sámi tent), before heading out to meet the reindeer.
After eating a typical Sámi meal around a traditional fire for lunch, you will enjoy a dog-sled ride into the heart of majestic landscapes of frozen rivers and wild forests, an unforgettable close-up encounter with Lappish nature.
After dining in a local restaurant, you will depart on a bus excursion to observe the Northern Lights.
The guide will make regular short stops, to explain this fascinating phenomenon and ensure that you enjoy optimal viewing in the best conditions (subject to favourable weather conditions).
Then, you will be transferred to your hotel.
Day 5 - Lulea
After breakfast and check-out, time at leisure depending on your flight schedule.
You will then be transferred to the airport in time for check-in for the PONANT selected flight or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).
