Sail the waters of the Mediterranean and dive into centuries of history with the perspective of Vincent Giovannoni, art anthropologist and chief curator of the Mucem. During a 12-day cruise aboard L’Austral, you will be amazed by the Mediterranean and its civilisations, a crossroads of exchange and a territory of divisions, the cradle of a unique way of life weaved together from fascinating cultures.
You will board in Athens, the mythical city dominated by the Acropolis and its monuments that form the most extraordinary architectural and artistic collection bequeathed by Ancient Greece to the rest of the world.
You will cross the emblematic Corinth Canal to arrive in Itea. On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, our on-board expert will recount the history of the legendary archaeological site of Delphi.
It will now be time to set sail towards Sicily and flamboyant Palermo. Historic sites such as the 12th-century cathedral or the Teatro Massimo opera house, one of the largest in Europe, blend with a uniquely bustling atmosphere.
Your exploration of the Mediterranean islands will continue as you discover Cagliari, capital of Sardinia and one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean; its historic centre is full of charm, with shaded stairs, small squares inundated with light and remains conjuring up its medieval grandeur.
Your cruise will then stop in the Balearic Islands on the well-preserved island of Menorca. Mahon, the island’s capital, will charm you with its age-old history and its exceptional port, which, at 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) long, is the biggest in the Mediterranean! A little further on, Ibiza, the “White Island” will enchant you with its wild coves and villages of white fincas, a natural beauty that has earned the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Roman ruins and sumptuous scenery of Cartagena will welcome you before your departure for Malaga, the lively capital of the Costa del Sol. Next will be Cadiz, one of the country’s oldest towns, built on a rock, combining its Mediterranean influences with its opening onto the tumultuous Atlantic Ocean.
Your cruise will come to an end in Lisbon, sitting on the Tagus River, distilling its one-of-a-kind charm imbued with rich history.

Vincent Giovannoni is an Art Anthropologist. He defended a PhD thesis focused on the small scale fisheries in the Mediterranean. For the European Commission, he conducted researches (Anthropology and Comparative Law) on the fisheries organization in the western Mediterranean (Spain, France, Italy). Thereafter, he worked during more than fifteen years as ethnologist for the French Ministry of Culture (in metropolitan France and overseas, in the Indian Ocean). After some missions in West Africa, he has been director of the Saint-Louis' French Cultural Center, at the mouth of the Senegal River. He’s now chief curator at the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (Mucem). In 2017, he curated at the Mucem the exhibition "Seafaring adventurers. Mediterranean - Indian Ocean. 7th - 17th century".

The Greek capital city is located on the edge of the Saronic gulf, in the east of the country. It bears a plural name in reference to the first villages that surround the Acropolis. You will be enchanted by the rocky plateau presided by its monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The Corinth Canal cuts through the Isthmus of Corinth, turning the Peloponnese into an island as it separates the region from the Greek mainland. Inaugurated in 1893, the canal is a little over six kilometres long and enables merchant vessels and passenger to avoid a long 400-km detour around the peninsula. The two sides of the canal reach a height of approximately fifty metres. From the exterior decks, don’t miss this unique opportunity to watch the ship as it navigates along the narrow strip of water encased between tall, ochre cliffs. What an experience!

Palermo is a rich culmination of so many cultural influences as seen in the Moorish designs on the cathedral, and the Byzantine mosaics of the Palatine chapel, which is itself housed within the precincts of the Norman palace. The capital of Sardinia, Cagliari, like Rome, is built on seven hills. Its Sardinian name means “castle”, in reference to the citadel, its historic centre, which dominates the city. The old ramparts are now pleasant panoramic terraces bordering picturesque streets. The city hosted the Nuragic, Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine civilisations before the rein of the Spanish Hapsburgs and the House of Savoy. The monuments of Cagliari bear the traces of these successive dominations, such as the Bastion of Saint-Rémy or the Sainte-Marie Cathedral. On the sea front, Art Nouveau-style public monuments give way to the Poetto beach, a magnificent stretch of sand that is 8 kilometres long.

You will be welcomed by the colourful houses of Mahon, its narrow streets and pretty squares that appear as you stroll around this richly contrasting city. Mahon reveals its different neighbourhoods, alternating between monuments, villas and white buildings. Discover the Santa Maria church, a building of neo-gothic inspiration, rebuilt in the 18th Century. It is worth a visit to see its monumental organ with more than 3,000 pipes and four keyboards. Around the Carmen church you will find a local market, full of stands selling avarcas, typical Menorcan sandals originally made by peasants. The emblematic island of the Balearics, “the white island” was a haven for European artistic bohemians from the 1930s and a paradise for hippies in search of authenticity in the 1960s. It has been a giant nightclub for gilded youth since the 1990s. Behind this fiesta economy, Ibiza has managed to preserve the charms of its wild coves and its villages of white fincas with flat roofs that inspired Le Corbusier. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its exemplary marine and coastal ecosystems but also thanks to the architectural vestiges of this former stronghold of the Mediterranean economy, from the Phoenicians up to the Renaissance.

A historical and festive town, Malaga is located in Andalusia, on the Costa del Sol. Between the marina and the beaches, the seaside promenade of La Farola offers an ideal setting for strolling and relaxing. Set slightly further back, the Malagueta bullring is one of the emblematic sites of the city. From the hill overlooking the old town, one can see Gibralfaro castle and the Alcazaba, two fortified ensembles rising out from the cypresses and maritime pines. To visit Pablo Picasso’s birthplace, you will go first to the courtly plaza de la Merced. A few streets back from here, you can explore the museum dedicated to the artist, in the Buenavista palace.

Andalusia’s Cadiz is located on the Costa de la Luz, in the south-west of Spain. From the beaches of Cortadura, to the flamenco bars of Santa Maria, through the colourful streets of la Viña, you will be amazed by this city, which is both steeped in history and extremely festive. In the medieval El Pópulo district, you will stroll along covered passages in the narrow gaps between houses. You will also be able to mosey around the lush Mina square. Portugal’s capital city located on the banks of the Tagus, only a few kilometres from the Atlantic coast, is a city of exceptionally rich cultural diversity. At the mouth of the river harbour, impose two UNESCO World Heritage monuments, Jeronimos monastery and Belem tower. The Alfama hillside is also worth visiting: known for its fado bars and its Moorish streets, this district is the oldest one of the city and one of the most typical. Not far from there, Chiado’s elegant streets are home to big fashion labels and are an invitation to a bit of of luxury shopping.
Sacred site of Delphi
On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the Delphi site opens the doors to a sacred world, where each stone summons up the glorious past of Ancient Greece.
Take the Sacred Way, the route walked in the past by pilgrims and kings of Antiquity, and go on a timeless journey. Here, the history of Greece and its legends overflow from everything: the ruins and ancient monuments, but also from the surrounding nature, which is still stunning.
This will jump out at you as you stand before the Temple of Apollo. It was constructed around the 7th century BC by two legendary architects, Trophonios and Agamedes; today, only a few vestiges remain of this Doric monument, decorated at the time with shields captured from the Persians. However, the foundations and columns that are still present seem to find an echo of their grandeur in the surrounding mountains.
The same goes for the ruins of the Senate of Delphi, as well as the vestiges of the Oracle of Delphi, where thousands of pilgrims gathered to receive the oracle of Pythia, high priestess of Apollo. The ancient theatre is also worth visiting.
A stone’s throw away from the sanctuary of Apollo, you will also be able to discover the Delphi Museum’s exhibitions, which present objects found at the archaeological site over the past century or more. Vases, bronzes, sculptures, precious offerings made to Apollo by pilgrims, objects of gold and ivory found under the slabs of the Sacred Way... they all recount the history of one of the most emblematic sites in Antiquity.

Marvel at the beauty of the Byzantine monastery of Hosios Loukas and take to the heights in the streets of Arachova, a small town perched 1,000 metres (3,000 feet) up on the illustrious Mount Parnassus.
The fortified monastery of Hosios Loukas, near Delphi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most characteristic monuments of the second golden age of Byzantine art. Founded at the start of the 10th century by the hermit Saint Luke, it includes a central-plan church decorated with superb marble decor and admirable mosaics on a gold background. The main shrine is none other than the tomb of Saint Luke, originally situated in the crypt.
Your excursion will continue with a visit of Arachova. Built on the side of the mountain, this small town of 3,300 inhabitants is famous for its traditional stone houses spread out over the northern slopes of Mount Parnassus, between 800 and 1,100 metres up. As you explore its small streets on your own, allow yourself to be charmed by the hospitality of the inhabitants, the local handicrafts and the gastronomy. Indeed, the town is well-known for its wine and cheese, as well as for its homemade carpets and blankets.

From the pier, embark your coach for a scenic fifteen-minute drive through the main streets of Palermo passing by the Piazza Ruggero Settimo, Politeama Square, Massimo Opera House, and the Cathedral.
Located on a wide bay beneath the shadow of Mount Pellegrino, Palermo is a jewel in the crown of Sicily. In the 9th century, Palermo was famed for the wealth of its court and its universities. Today, it is an international famed city with modern day treasures and priceless ancient monuments of architecture and art.
Your stop will be made at the Palatine Chapel, the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily located on the ground floor of the Palazzo Reale in Palermo, where you will enjoy a guided visit. The chapel was commissioned by Roger II of Sicily in 1132 to be built upon an older chapel (now the crypt) constructed around 1080. It took eight years to build it and many more to decorate it with mosaics and fine art.
Back on your coach, you will travel to Monreale, where you will visit its Cathedral, the Duomo.
The Cathedral of Monreale is one of the greatest extant examples of Norman architecture in the world. It was begun in 1174 by William II, and in 1182 the church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan cathedral. The church is a national monument of Italy and one of the most important attractions of Sicily. You will also visit the Benedictine’s cloister; the courtyard is enclosed by an arcade supported by 216 sets of twin columns, each with a different design and richly decorated capitals.
After some free time for shopping, re-board your coach for the thirty-minute return drive to the pier and your ship.
- This tour involves approximately 0.6 mile (1 km) of walking on flat streets with 90 steps to negotiate from the coach parking to the Monreale Cathedral. From the pier, embark your coach and start your panoramic drive through the historical centre of Palermo, before reaching the coastal highway which will bring you to the charming fishing village of Cefalù.
Cefalù is a haven of tranquillity, a refuge and a sanctuary of religious inspiration. A city of facets, levels, and epochs. The name, which translated means "head", probably referring to the shape of the hill and huge rock crowned with an ancient castle, rising above the town, was given to the town by the Greeks. Cefalù's origins are surrounded in mystery.
Legend tells that Roger II, the well-known Norman sovereign of Sicily, in gratitude to God for sparing his life in a violent storm at sea, commissioned the building of a Cathedral at Cefalù, where he landed after the tempest.
Its characteristics, as well as its position, so close to the sea, make it something of a fortress from the outside as much as it is a church on the inside. The Cathedral was begun on a site in which Roman buildings had already existed. However, after unforeseen circumstances, and changes in construction plans, the original building was never finished. The remains of this building project are three roofs which testify to past ages and building techniques. Inside the cathedral, you will see the paintings and gold Byzantine mosaics the Cathedral is known for.
Continue your walking tour with a photo-stop at the medieval wash-house and the Osterio Magno. Per the tradition, it was built by Roger II as his mansion, but it probably dates from the 14th century. Traces of the medieval tower and decoration can be seen. Excavations held in the interior have showed the presence of ancient edifices and ceramics.
Before returning to the ship, a refreshment will be served and you will have some free time to explore Cefalù on your own and browse the quaint boutiques.

In Nora, a former trading post founded by the Phoenicians, the vestiges of several civilisations offer a wonderful dive into the past. First Carthaginian, then Roman, Nora declined and disappeared around the 8th century. From the old town, you can still see, among many archaeological marvels, Carthaginian warehouses, a Carthaginian-Roman temple, large thermal baths with splendid mosaics and an almost intact theatre, dating from Roman times.
The water-supply system is particularly interesting, with large underwater pipes: their mosaics and very fine tesserae form rich geometric patterns. The sea around Nora still covers the part of the town that sank during an earthquake, but the former piers can still be recognised. After the visit, you will have a snack in a local café.

From the pier, board your coach and start with a short panoramic drive of Cagliari. Your first stop will be made in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria. Then you will continue to Monte Urpino from where you will enjoy a panoramic view over the capital of Sardinia.
Then, you will drive to San Sperate, a 30-minute drive. Situated just near Cagliari, San Sperate is one of the most important Sardinia agricultural centres. As many remains testify, San Sperate has a very ancient history. The famous “Maschera Ghignante” (sneering mask) has been found in 1976, during one of the first archaeological excavations.
In 1967, San Sperate became a Museum-village and it now hosts many works of important Italian and foreign artists, as well as cultural meetings, theatre exhibitions and festivals. The idea of making San Sperate a Museum-village was born in 1966 by Pinuccio Sciola, who painted all the walls in white on the occasion of the Corpus Christi feast and invited several artists to paint their work on the walls of the village.
You will meet your local guide and have a guided visit of the historical centre of the village, where you can admire a large number of “Murales” and sculptures meant to embellish the village. From the pier, board your coach for the 50-minute drive to the old capital of the island, Ciutadella. Founded by the Cartheginians, Ciutadella remained the capital of Menorca until 1772, and it remains the ecclesiastical capital to this day. Ciutadella has a rather grand air with many elegant historical buildings, churches and large squares. The old town is packed with impressive architecture, including a gothic cathedral and several palaces belonging to the noble families, some of which are open to the public.

Settled by the Moors in the 9th century and conquered by the Christians in the 13th century, this bustling city offers an array of architectural delights.
Once arriving, you will visit the beautiful Baroque style facade of the cathedral. Located in the heart of Murcia near the Segura River, La Santa Iglesia Catedral de Santa María popularly known as the Cathedral de Murcia was built on the site of the demolished great Aljama Mosque of Murcia between the 14th and 18th centuries in several architectural styles. The interior of the Cathedral is composed with three naves mainly Gothic, its main facade is Baroque, the bell tower is Renaissance and Neoclassical, and the Junterones Chapel is Renaissance.
Then, you will see the Episcopal Palace before reaching the Royal Casino of Murcia. The Royal Casino of Murcia is one of the most historic buildings, situated in the heart of the city centre not far from the cathedral. The building, which dates from 1847, is a mixture of different artistic styles. In 1983 it was declared a National historic building. The Royal Casino of Murcia Society was founded on 11th June 1847.
The society first started in the mansion of Marqués and later various other properties were acquired to form the present layout. Although, this is still an acting private club, the ground floor is being kept open to public and cultural events. After a period of decline in the second half of the 20th century, the Royal Casino of Murcia Society has been revived considerably. Between 2006 and 2009 the building was completely refurbished, and for this reason the King Don Juan Carlos I of Spain granted the Casino the title ´Real´ (Royal). Refurbishment of the whole building was done, many of the rooms were restored to their original decor and the latest technology was installed throughout the building.
You will also pass through the Squares of Santo Domingo and Romeo. There, you will enjoy a stop for a tapa and a drink, before walking back to your coach and return to the pier in Cartagena.

The Nazrid Palace, named after the last dynasty of Sultans which made important reformations, is one of the finest examples of Islamic Art. Although damaged and restored over the centuries, it is not difficult to picture the place as it was in all its glory 600 years ago. The ceilings drip with stalactites in stucco, and each room appears more richly decorated than the previous one. Marvel at the delicate marble columns, graceful arcades and fine craftsmanship in the Sultans' "paradise on earth". The Hall of the Ambassadors and the Court of the Lions are considered as the gems of this oriental jewel box. From its windows you can look back across to the old quarter of Albayzin and the gypsy haunts of Sacromonte.

From the pier, board your coach for the 30-minute drive to the "La Concepción" Botanical Garden . The La Concepción estate belonged to the Marquises de Casa Loring between 1850 and 1990 before being purchased by Malaga City Council. Its owners created a park where they planted exotic species brought by their commercial fleet from Latin America, the Philippines and Australia. It's a romantic garden with winding paths, ponds, waterfalls and streams. It features lush semi-tropical vegetation, rubber plants, palm trees and Araucarias. The park is also famous for its cultural heritage: the Loringiano Museum, a small Doric church, and the wisteria-covered pergola close to the palace. Officially declared a Historical-Artistic Garden in 1943, it is now also recognised as a Site of Cultural Interest. A local guide will take you through the historic part of the garden and explain everything you need to know.
After this visit, you will return by coach to the city centre, where you will begin a walking tour through the old town. You will have an inside visit of the Cathedral of the Incarnation. The construction of the Cathedral wrapped up in the latter half of the 18th century, after over 250 years of work. It has its own gardens and a beautiful patio. The Cathedral is one of the major monuments of the Renaissance in Andalusia.
After this visit, you will return by coach to the city center, where you will begin a walking tour of the old town. This tour includes an interior visit to the Cathedral of the Incarnation. The cathedral is one of the city's most important monuments. By order of the Catholic Monarchs, work began on the cathedral in the first half of the 19th century. It has its own gardens and a beautiful patio. The cathedral is one of Andalusia's most important Renaissance monuments.

Follow your guide on a stroll through the old town of Cadiz, visiting the most emblematic squares and monuments.
With your guide, set off from the quay for a guided tour of Cadiz, the oldest city in Europe. The old town, with its Moorish appearance, is rife with intriguing narrow, cobbled streets that open onto small squares.
You will see the Plaza de San Juan de Dios, the town hall and the 18th-century Baroque and neoclassical cathedral.
The cathedral took 116 years to build, which explains the mixture of styles. Construction began in the Baroque style and was completed in the Neoclassical style. The interior features sculptures from the old cathedral. The towers and sacristy were built last, in the 19th century. The vaults of the high altar and the choir stalls are remarkable, although the latter did not come from the cathedral. The cathedral is topped by a golden brick dome, which gives it an impressive appearance. The brilliant Manuel de Falla is buried in the crypt.
Discover its interesting interior, including the museum that belongs to the cathedral and contains the cathedral treasury.

When you will reach Athens, you will make your first stop at the Panathenaic Stadium, a 19th-century reconstruction on Roman foundations, in which the first modern Olympic Games took place. This stadium is also known as the Kallimármaro which means “the beautiful marbled” because it is the only major stadium in the world built entirely of white marble. It was also restored to host some competitions during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Day 2 - Athens
After breakfast, your walking guided visit will be first focus on Anafiotika district.
This picturesque old quarter is located under the Acropolis. This very typical architecture looks like to the Cycladic islands, with narrow streets and white-washed houses with colorful shutters.
You will learn more about its history with your guide. And you will have the perfect opportunity to take the most beautiful photos, through the lens of a professional photograph at your disposal to give you tips and help you..
Later, you will walk until a local tavern in the Plaka district and you will enjoy a traditional Greek lunch followed by a short time at leisure in Plaka.
During the afternoon, you will visit the Acropolis Museum, which is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built in order to house every artifact found on the rock and at its foot, covering a large period of time from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. Nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres.
After the Museum visit, time at leisure to strool around the Museum area (about 1 hour), or to visit on your own, the Acropolis site (this visit is not accessible to disabled people). Then short drive back to your hotel (about 15 minutes).

Day 3 - Athens

On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the Delphi site opens the doors to a sacred world, where each stone summons up the glorious past of Ancient Greece.
Take the Sacred Way, the route walked in the past by pilgrims and kings of Antiquity, and go on a timeless journey. Here, the history of Greece and its legends overflow from everything: the ruins and ancient monuments, but also from the surrounding nature, which is still stunning.
This will jump out at you as you stand before the Temple of Apollo. It was constructed around the 7th century BC by two legendary architects, Trophonios and Agamedes; today, only a few vestiges remain of this Doric monument, decorated at the time with shields captured from the Persians. However, the foundations and columns that are still present seem to find an echo of their grandeur in the surrounding mountains.
The same goes for the ruins of the Senate of Delphi, as well as the vestiges of the Oracle of Delphi, where thousands of pilgrims gathered to receive the oracle of Pythia, high priestess of Apollo. The ancient theatre is also worth visiting.
A stone’s throw away from the sanctuary of Apollo, you will also be able to discover the Delphi Museum’s exhibitions, which present objects found at the archaeological site over the past century or more. Vases, bronzes, sculptures, precious offerings made to Apollo by pilgrims, objects of gold and ivory found under the slabs of the Sacred Way... they all recount the history of one of the most emblematic sites in Antiquity.

Marvel at the beauty of the Byzantine monastery of Hosios Loukas and take to the heights in the streets of Arachova, a small town perched 1,000 metres (3,000 feet) up on the illustrious Mount Parnassus.
The fortified monastery of Hosios Loukas, near Delphi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most characteristic monuments of the second golden age of Byzantine art. Founded at the start of the 10th century by the hermit Saint Luke, it includes a central-plan church decorated with superb marble decor and admirable mosaics on a gold background. The main shrine is none other than the tomb of Saint Luke, originally situated in the crypt.
Your excursion will continue with a visit of Arachova. Built on the side of the mountain, this small town of 3,300 inhabitants is famous for its traditional stone houses spread out over the northern slopes of Mount Parnassus, between 800 and 1,100 metres up. As you explore its small streets on your own, allow yourself to be charmed by the hospitality of the inhabitants, the local handicrafts and the gastronomy. Indeed, the town is well-known for its wine and cheese, as well as for its homemade carpets and blankets.

From the pier, embark your coach for a scenic fifteen-minute drive through the main streets of Palermo passing by the Piazza Ruggero Settimo, Politeama Square, Massimo Opera House, and the Cathedral.
Located on a wide bay beneath the shadow of Mount Pellegrino, Palermo is a jewel in the crown of Sicily. In the 9th century, Palermo was famed for the wealth of its court and its universities. Today, it is an international famed city with modern day treasures and priceless ancient monuments of architecture and art.
Your stop will be made at the Palatine Chapel, the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily located on the ground floor of the Palazzo Reale in Palermo, where you will enjoy a guided visit. The chapel was commissioned by Roger II of Sicily in 1132 to be built upon an older chapel (now the crypt) constructed around 1080. It took eight years to build it and many more to decorate it with mosaics and fine art.
Back on your coach, you will travel to Monreale, where you will visit its Cathedral, the Duomo.
The Cathedral of Monreale is one of the greatest extant examples of Norman architecture in the world. It was begun in 1174 by William II, and in 1182 the church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan cathedral. The church is a national monument of Italy and one of the most important attractions of Sicily. You will also visit the Benedictine’s cloister; the courtyard is enclosed by an arcade supported by 216 sets of twin columns, each with a different design and richly decorated capitals.
After some free time for shopping, re-board your coach for the thirty-minute return drive to the pier and your ship.

From the pier, embark your coach and start your panoramic drive through the historical centre of Palermo, before reaching the coastal highway which will bring you to the charming fishing village of Cefalù.
Cefalù is a haven of tranquillity, a refuge and a sanctuary of religious inspiration. A city of facets, levels, and epochs. The name, which translated means "head", probably referring to the shape of the hill and huge rock crowned with an ancient castle, rising above the town, was given to the town by the Greeks. Cefalù's origins are surrounded in mystery.
Legend tells that Roger II, the well-known Norman sovereign of Sicily, in gratitude to God for sparing his life in a violent storm at sea, commissioned the building of a Cathedral at Cefalù, where he landed after the tempest.
Its characteristics, as well as its position, so close to the sea, make it something of a fortress from the outside as much as it is a church on the inside. The Cathedral was begun on a site in which Roman buildings had already existed. However, after unforeseen circumstances, and changes in construction plans, the original building was never finished. The remains of this building project are three roofs which testify to past ages and building techniques. Inside the cathedral, you will see the paintings and gold Byzantine mosaics the Cathedral is known for.
Continue your walking tour with a photo-stop at the medieval wash-house and the Osterio Magno. Per the tradition, it was built by Roger II as his mansion, but it probably dates from the 14th century. Traces of the medieval tower and decoration can be seen. Excavations held in the interior have showed the presence of ancient edifices and ceramics.
Before returning to the ship, a refreshment will be served and you will have some free time to explore Cefalù on your own and browse the quaint boutiques.

Discover Cagliari and the archaeological site of Nora, located on a promontory of the Capo di Pula peninsular.
Not just the gateway to Sardinia’s most beautiful coastlines – the Costa Rei, Costa del Sud and Costa Smeralda – Cagliari itself is also well worth a visit. Its rich baroque architecture and its lively districts are reminders of this island’s warm soul, while the Bastione di San Remy, a monumental fort perched on the old town, offers a stunning panorama.
In Nora, a former trading post founded by the Phoenicians, the vestiges of several civilisations offer a wonderful dive into the past. First Carthaginian, then Roman, Nora declined and disappeared around the 8th century. From the old town, you can still see, among many archaeological marvels, Carthaginian warehouses, a Carthaginian-Roman temple, large thermal baths with splendid mosaics and an almost intact theatre, dating from Roman times.
The water-supply system is particularly interesting, with large underwater pipes: their mosaics and very fine tesserae form rich geometric patterns. The sea around Nora still covers the part of the town that sank during an earthquake, but the former piers can still be recognised. After the visit, you will have a snack in a local café.

From the pier, board your coach and start with a short panoramic drive of Cagliari. Your first stop will be made in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria. Then you will continue to Monte Urpino from where you will enjoy a panoramic view over the capital of Sardinia.
Then, you will drive to San Sperate, a 30-minute drive. Situated just near Cagliari, San Sperate is one of the most important Sardinia agricultural centres. As many remains testify, San Sperate has a very ancient history. The famous “Maschera Ghignante” (sneering mask) has been found in 1976, during one of the first archaeological excavations.
In 1967, San Sperate became a Museum-village and it now hosts many works of important Italian and foreign artists, as well as cultural meetings, theatre exhibitions and festivals. The idea of making San Sperate a Museum-village was born in 1966 by Pinuccio Sciola, who painted all the walls in white on the occasion of the Corpus Christi feast and invited several artists to paint their work on the walls of the village.
You will meet your local guide and have a guided visit of the historical centre of the village, where you can admire a large number of “Murales” and sculptures meant to embellish the village. Your walking tour will also include the garden laboratory of the world-famous sculptor Pinuccio Sciola, who promoted the murals at San Sperate and created the sound stones, both an artistic creation and a musical instrument, unique in its kind.

From the pier, board your coach for the 50-minute drive to the old capital of the island, Ciutadella. Founded by the Cartheginians, Ciutadella remained the capital of Menorca until 1772, and it remains the ecclesiastical capital to this day. Ciutadella has a rather grand air with many elegant historical buildings, churches and large squares. The old town is packed with impressive architecture, including a gothic cathedral and several palaces belonging to the noble families, some of which are open to the public.
Upon your arrival, you will be given a guided tour of the historic centre of town before enjoying some free time to wander the streets.
From here, you will head back towards Mahon and, en route, enjoy a photo stop at the beautiful Cala Galdana beach resort, set in a horseshoe-shaped bay surrounded by pine clad cliffs. The drive will take you to the east and the small village of Mercadal in the centre of the island.

Settled by the Moors in the 9th century and conquered by the Christians in the 13th century, this bustling city offers an array of architectural delights.
Once arriving, you will visit the beautiful Baroque style facade of the cathedral. Located in the heart of Murcia near the Segura River, La Santa Iglesia Catedral de Santa María popularly known as the Cathedral de Murcia was built on the site of the demolished great Aljama Mosque of Murcia between the 14th and 18th centuries in several architectural styles. The interior of the Cathedral is composed with three naves mainly Gothic, its main facade is Baroque, the bell tower is Renaissance and Neoclassical, and the Junterones Chapel is Renaissance.
Then, you will see the Episcopal Palace before reaching the Royal Casino of Murcia. The Royal Casino of Murcia is one of the most historic buildings, situated in the heart of the city centre not far from the cathedral. The building, which dates from 1847, is a mixture of different artistic styles. In 1983 it was declared a National historic building. The Royal Casino of Murcia Society was founded on 11th June 1847.
The society first started in the mansion of Marqués and later various other properties were acquired to form the present layout. Although, this is still an acting private club, the ground floor is being kept open to public and cultural events. After a period of decline in the second half of the 20th century, the Royal Casino of Murcia Society has been revived considerably. Between 2006 and 2009 the building was completely refurbished, and for this reason the King Don Juan Carlos I of Spain granted the Casino the title ´Real´ (Royal). Refurbishment of the whole building was done, many of the rooms were restored to their original decor and the latest technology was installed throughout the building.
You will also pass through the Squares of Santo Domingo and Romeo. There, you will enjoy a stop for a tapa and a drink, before walking back to your coach and return to the pier in Cartagena.

From the pier, embark your coach for a one-hour drive across the countryside, passing through the Natural Park of La Breña, a protected pine forest. You will go to Cape Trafalgar, the main site where the Battle of Trafalgar took place. Your guide will give you a brief explanation of the battle where Lord Nelson lost his life, and a short photo stop will be proposed.
Squeezed between the sierras and the sea, the classic white-washed village of Vejer de la Frontera is perched high above the steep gorge of the River Barbate. Declared as Historic-Artistic Site in 1976, and winner of the First National Embellishment Award in 1978, Vejer de la Frontera's most stunning feature is the Arab-Andalusian popular architecture.
During your walking tour on the cobblestoned streets, you will meander through secret corners, hidden patios and typical houses. Along your route, you will pass by Plaza de España, one of the prettiest village squares in Spain, where you can enjoy a refreshment and some free time before your return to the ship.

During the show, enjoy typical tapas to be totally immersed in the local atmosphere.

Day 1 - Lisbon pier/Comporta region
After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at the port by our local representative.
Transfer of around 1 h 15 minutes from Lisbon Pier to the Sublime Comporta 5* Hotel. This is located in Muda, 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) from Comporta, a preserved region offering a setting that features dunes, pine trees, vineyards and rice fields. It is the ideal location for a rejuvenating break.
This morning, you will head towards the territory of Herdade da Comporta, a natural reserve that brings together several hamlets. In these wild landscapes between the ocean and endless rice fields, you will visit the Rice Museum, a site devoted to rice cultivation and the impact of this crop on the region’s history.
You will then set off to visit the vineyards where you will attend a tasting session. This experience will let you learn more about the specific features of grape cultivation in this unique environment whose sandy soil is subject to the influence of the ocean.

Day 2 – Comporta region
After breakfast, you will be driven to the departure point for a walk that will last around 2 hours and during which you will be introduced to bird watching. This narrow strip of land between the ocean and the rice fields is home to a large variety of species.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant or at the Sublime Comporta Beach Club depending on opening days.
The afternoon will be dedicated to discovering a typical Alentejo village, Alcacer do Sal, which is built along the Sado River. On your guided walk through the narrow streets of the old town, you will see the castle and the museum, among other sites. You will not leave before a taste of local colour, these sweets made of pine nuts that are called “pinhoadas”.

Day 3 - Comporta region/Lisbon airport
After breakfast and check-out, time at leisure depending on your flight schedule.

You will depart the port by coach for a glimpse of the Portuguese capital. The scenic drive will lead you uphill to the Park Edward VII. Park Edward VII is named after the king from United Kingdom with the same name, who visit Portugal in 1903, to strengthen relations between the 2 countries. In 1945 the Portuguese Modernist architect Francisco Keil do Amaral redesigned the park to its current configuration, giving one of the best views of Lisbon.
Then, you will visit the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (closed on Tuesday). You will travel throught 5.000 years of History thanks to this fascinating private collection amased by Calouste Gulbenkian, one of the most important private collecttions of international art.
Lunch will be served in a local restaurant.
