From Denmark’s coasts to the shores of Great Britain, PONANT invites you on a unique journey at the crossing point of the North and Baltic Seas. This timeless 11-day interlude aboard Le Lapérouse takes you on a voyage of discovery of these Hanseatic and Flanders cities, with their rich history and powerful architectural and cultural heritage.
Throughout your journey, you will benefit from an excursion included per person per port of call, to choose from a selection offered by PONANT. During this cruise, you can admire the magnificent historic centre of Lübeck, the former capital of the Hanseatic League and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and from Travemünde, climb aboard the legendary Molli steam train built in 1886, which runs on the Baltic coast’s oldest narrow-gauge steam railway from Waremünde. The diversity of experiences on offer promises you intense and varied moments (to discover the full range of excursions, go to the itinerary tab).
From Copenhagen, a city full of art and history, Le Lapérouse heads south to the German coast and the pleasant seaside town of Warnemünde, lying north of Rostock. There you can visit the Hanseatic town and stroll through its narrow streets to discover the pastel-coloured merchants houses of the Renaissance, Saint Mary’s Church and its magnificent town hall. A short distance to the west,Travemünde (at the mouth of the Trave) is a real holiday haven, famous for its golden beaches, its imposing lighthouse, its architecture and its impressive maritime history.
You now sail down the Kiel Canal to the Netherlands and the port of Harlingen. Once a whaling centre and now a port that specialises in shrimping, this dynamic town offers travellers the chance to admire some fascinating sites and museums. In Scheveningen, the misty spray of the North Sea speaks of the region's marine legends, while the little cobbled streets of its historic centre reveal their splendid architectural treasures. Then, in Amsterdam, you can stroll through the city of canals and enjoy the hospitality of its inhabitants. The city is famous for its museums, but you will also fall under the charm of the incredible flower market and the superb façades of the beautiful houses.
You now sail along the Belgian coastline, and at the end of the Scheldt River, the port city of Antwerp rises before you. This lively, dynamic city still has magnificent architectural jewels, including the Grand Place, bordered by splendid merchant houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Meanwhile, in Ostend, you can admire the Belle Époque facades of this seaside town, which is highly popular for its light sandy beach, and home to the Kunstmuseum aan Zee, which retraces the history of Belgian art since 1830.
The culminating point comes with London, the cosmopolitan capital of the United Kingdom, with its rich historical heritage and extraordinary artistic avant-garde, after you pass beneath the legendary Tower Bridge.

During the days spent on board, you are advised to wear comfortable clothes or casual outfits. The entire ship is air-conditioned, so a light sweater, a light jacket or a shawl may be necessary. Connected to the far eastern side of Sealand island, a few kilometres away from the Swedish coasts, Copenhagen offers you the high colour of Scandinavian capitals. You can discover the city's riches that weaves through the canal networks through the historical districts of Christiansborg and Nyhavn. Many palaces provide an apercu of Danish history. For eating, you can try out the smorrebrod, traditional danish sandwiches made with ham, cheese or smoked fish.

Located at the estuary of the Warnow river, Warnemunde is a highly popular German seaside resort on the Baltic Sea. This 12th-century fishing village became a port of crucial importance to the economy of the Hanseatic City of Rostock in the 14th century. Today, the old fishermen’s houses have become shops and cafés, and beautiful mansions line the promenade. You will also be able to discover Rostock, where the city-centre architecture and the ramparts, built of bricks from Brandenburg, are a reminder of the city’s position in the Hanseatic League. Succumb to the charms of the merchant houses around New Market Square or of Saint Mary’s Church and its astronomical clock.

Made famous by Thomas Mann and Dostoevsky, Travemünde has, since the 19th century, been a popular seaside resort for the cultural elites of Northern Europe. The colourful beach huts that line the 4.5 km of fine sandy beach, the seafront walkway lined with boutiques and cafes and its wide streets have kept their yesteryear charm. From Travemünde, you can discover the magnificent historical centre of Lübeck, for the former capital of the Hanseatic League, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Characterised by its unique profile with seven bell towers and the island of its Old Town surrounded by quaysides and parks, the city has managed to preserve many patrician dwellings of the 15th and 16th centuries and a monumental fortified town gate.

Lying at the mouth of the Harinxma canal in the Frise province of the Netherlands, Harlingen has always had a very close relationship with the sea. Once a whale fishing centre and today a port specialised in shrimp fishing, its dynamism has transformed it into a modern city which also offers travellers museums and sites of interest. The local museum, the Hannemahuis, is housed in an 18th Century dwelling and presents a collection of regional furniture and objects retracing the history of the city. The lighthouse and the city hall with their typically Dutch architecture also deserve a visit.

Scheveningen, a former small fishing village, is the seaside resort of La Hague, which is the seat of the government of the Netherlands and official residence of its king, and also called the “legal capital of the world”. Only a 20-minute tram ride from the city centre, Scheveningen has a holiday feel, with its long fine sandy beach, its kitesurf boards and its windsurf boards. On the promenade that runs along the sea, you will admire the Grand Hôtel Amrâth Kurhaus, a jewel from the baroque era, as well as the De Pier, a 382-metre (1,250-foot) long pier — one of the longest in the world — as well as many trendy restaurants.

The museums of the city retrace the history of Antwerp, including the home of Rubens, containing the works of the painter, and the Plantin-Moretus museum, a print works and publishing house that are UNESCO listed. A city of contrasts, attached to its traditions while buzzing with modernity, the capital of the United Kingdom has countless historic districts and notable sites to explore. From Hyde Park to the City through Westminster and Trafalgar Square, get ready to take on London's frenetic tempo. In between a visit to the National Gallery, a stroll through Covent Garden and a trip to Tower Bridge, you can take a quiet breather in one of London's many beautiful parks and gardens.
Lübeck by land & sea
From the pier, board your coach with your local guide for an hour and a half minute journey to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck passing through the Northern German countryside.
Upon arrival in Lubeck meet your local guide and start your walking tour through the charming medieval old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your first stop will be the impressive Holsten Gate, a relic of the old medieval fortifications that protected the city’s border then you will take a stroll through Lübeck’s romantic alleys and courtyards that extends like a labyrinth though the historical center. You will reach St. Mary’s Church, a medieval structure built in the 13th century and example of the German brick style of the north coast. Admire the buidling and listen to your guide's explanations, learning all about the church's history. You will then pass by the “Buddenbrooks” House, with its ornate façade and former home of the German writers Heinrich and Thomas Mann, both born in Lübeck. Next you will see one of Germany’s most impressive Town Halls, where you will gain a deeper inside on Lübeck as the “Queen of the Hanseatic League”. Heading back to the center you will pass by the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, originally built in the 13th century, it is one of Europe’s oldest charitable institutions caring for the sick and disadvantaged. Its impressive structure continues in the architectural pattern of the medieval brick style.
After this first experience of the city, you will enjoy lunch in one of the most famous local restaurants. Afterwards you will have free time to explore the treasures of this city independently.
Last but not least you will get an impressive glance of the city from the waterways. You will board your canal boat and take in the beauty of this city whilst cruising along romantic channels and sights. The captain of the boat will tell interesting anecdotes.
Finally, you will re-board your coach and enjoy a scenic ride back to Warnemünde and your ship.

From the pier, meet your guide and start your journey towards the city of Lübeck, a major trading center of the Hanseatic League.
To enter the city's most historical part, you will pass by the beautiful Holsten Gate. Nearby, you will have the opportunity to admire the St. Peters Church and learn about the fascinating history of the city.
After this first glimpse of the city, you will make your way towards the European Museum of the Hanse, a true must for European history and trading lovers. Since the 12th century, German merchants have spanned a medieval trading network across borders from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea, from the Alps to the French Atlantic coast and even to more distant coastal cities in Spain and Portugal. Offices were in former trading hot spots such as Novgorod, Bruges, London, and Bergen to protect and develop their outposts under their own legislation. Through vibrant markets in the Baltic region, they offered their valuable natural goods for sale, they traded in fine fabrics, spices and jewel stones in the Baltic region and beyond.
Once at the museum, learn about the merchant trade, set off like them from Lübeck to the north and experience the exciting atmosphere of a Hanseatic Day. Experience life along the old trade routes and the flow of goods in the development of the Hanseatic League up to today's Europe commercial powerhouse. Lively room productions bring to life historic settings of the river Neva, in Bruges and Bergen, as well as the historic Lübeck. Cabinets with original objects from all over Europe, archaeological finds and magnificent facsimiles provide the scientific background.
Finally, your guide will accompany you back to the port and your ship, on your coach.

Dive into the history of one of the most famous aspects of industrial heritage in the Netherland: the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal, one of the country’s many inventions to fight rising water levels.
After an hour’s drive, you will see from afar the 60-metre (200-foot) high chimney of the Wouda Pumping Station, one of the most beautiful and innovative monuments in the Netherlands. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this magnificent building inspired by the Amsterdam School style has no shortage of superlatives: the largest steam-pumping station ever built and the only one in the world still in operation.
Constructed in 1920 to pump excess water out of Friesland, a frequently flooded region each winter, the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal can pump over 4,000 cubic metres of water per minute, which means around 6 million m³ of water per day: this is a real technical feat. Technology enthusiasts come from all over the world to enjoy a guided tour of this splendid example of industrial design.

Discover the history and trade secrets of one of the world’s most famous cheeses - gouda - and fall under the charm of the eponymous city, its cobbled streets, its market stalls and its picture-postcard appearance.
Nestled between the walls of a 17th-century farm along the IJssel River, the Hoogerwaard dairy perpetuates centuries-old know-how to make gouda in the purest Dutch tradition. Well-sourced unpasteurised milk and artisanal techniques give the cheese all its flavour, as you will be able to discover during a visit of the establishment followed by a tasting.
Then, the city of Gouda, its many markets, its cobbled streets, its small shops and its Saint John's Church - famous for its stained glass windows-, will end up convincing you that the Netherlands is, in fact, the other big cheese country.

Amsterdam sightseeing & canal cruise
This combination tour offers an excellent overview of the city, famous for its canals and gabled houses.
Depart by coach from the pier to Amsterdam and go for a guided walk through the center of Amsterdam.
You will walk past the Baroque-style Royal Palace, built on 13,695 pilings sunk into marshy soil. Upon its completion in 1655, it was hailed as an "Eighth Wonder of the World."
Towers and steeples are among Amsterdam's loveliest features. You will pass the Munttoren (Mint Tower), with a clock and bells that still seem to mirror the Golden Age. You will also pass by the Flower Market and the Beguinage before heading to the canal boat pontoon.
As many sights are only accessible from the water, a tour of Amsterdam would not be complete without a scenic cruise along the city's canals. Aboard a glass topped motor launch, you will glide through the historic canals, passing elegant merchants’ mansions, churches and warehouses which date back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
At the end of your cruise, you will return directly to the ship.

From the pier, board your coach for a 30 min transfer to the Van Gogh Museum.
Your guided visit to the Van Gogh Museum is a unique experience. The Museum features the largest Van Gogh collection in the world, including 200 paintings, 400 drawings, and 700 letters by Amsterdam’s native son. The main exhibition chronicles the various phases of Van Gogh’s life, and features famous works such as The Potato Eaters, Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette, Bedroom in Arles, and Sunflowers.
The museum was founded in part by the widow of Vincent’s brother, Theo, who inherited her husband’s collection after his death. Johanna Van Gogh-Bonger dedicated the latter part of her life to promoting Vincent’s work through sales, exhibitions, and the publication of his letters. Johanna’s son continued her work after her death, and the Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973. In September 2013, the museum unveiled the long-lost Van Gogh painting Sunset at Montmajour, which spent years in a Norwegian attic, believed to be by another painter. It is the first full-size canvas by him discovered since 1928.
On completion of the tour, you will reboard your coach and return to your ship.

From the pier, take a short walk to your meeting point and gear up. From here, start your exploration of Amsterdam countryside with your guide.
Since the beginning of times, the Dutch people always have had a love-hate relationship with the water that is surrounding them. In the past a lot of floods and flood disasters gave the Dutch people a hard time to live this close by the seaside. However thanks to these floods Holland now has a spectacular scenery with green fields, waterways and polders everywhere. The water has created a beautiful, enchanting landscape!
During your cycling tour, be amazed by the peacefulness of this area and learn more about the rural Amsterdam. Pass typical Dutch scenery with cows, windmills and flowers and discover beautifully charming villages where time seems to stand still. Enjoy a stop at a local café and take a short ferry ride with your bikes to enjoy the simple beauty of Holland from different angles.

Rural Holland
On this tour you will pass many beautiful Dutch farms on your way to the very authentic Dutch village of "Broek in Waterland", known for its typical wooden houses and farms. After a stroll through the fairy-tale-like community, proceed to the "Beemsterpolder" (the Beemster lowland), registered on UNESCO's world heritage list.
Drive through the beautiful lowlands North of Amsterdam to the highlight of the tour, an original 17th century windmill, used to reclaim this area. Here you will learn how the Dutch manage to live below sea level. A short film provides insight in 300 years of wind drainage, followed by an independent visit to the mill, during which you will have the opportunity to buy some small souvenirs as a memento of your visit.
After a scenic drive through the lush lowlands, you will return to Amsterdam, directly to the ship.

Afterwards, you will head north to admire the Central Railway Station. Dubbed the 'Railway Cathedral', it is one of the world's most impressive railway stations and one of the main landmarks in Antwerp. The railway station was built between 1895 and 1905. An extensive restoration, which started in 1993 was completed 16 years later in 2009. Today the whole complex is over 400 metres long and has two entrances. There are three levels of tracks and a shopping centre which includes a diamond gallery with more than 30 diamond shops.
Continue your sightseeing tour of Antwerp driving by the MAS Museum and the 'Havenhuis' (Port House). MAS Architects, Neutelings and Riedijk, alternated between red sandstone from India and glass panes to give this riverfront museum a distinctive look that's both modern but also recalls the 16th century store house used in Antwerp's Old Port. The connection to the city is in the details as well. If you look closely at the 203-foot-tall building, you will see 3,185 silver hands, the symbol of Antwerp. Dame Zaha Hadid is the genius behind the brand new 'Havenhuis', home to the port of Antwerp. This intriguing piece of architecture is a combination of an old fire station and a modern glass construction that mimics the waves of the river Scheldt.
Then, your coach will drop you near the cruise terminal where your guided walking tour starts. Discover the old town section surrounding the marketplace with the Town Hall, gabled guild houses, cafes and Brabo statue. Then walk one block to the Vlaaikensgang ('Pie Alley'), typical of medieval Antwerp. Walk one more block to Our Lady’s Cathedral for an inside visit. On your guided walk through the city, your guide will lead you to the MAS Museum, Antwerp’s landmark in the heart of the historic Docklands port district. The 60 metre high MAS tower will afford you the opportunity to take in Antwerp’s skyline from the roof terrace.
Continue your guided walk through the historic city centre, passing highlights such as Meat House, Market Square & Plantin-Moretus Museum. Walk by the Groenplaats with its statue of the famous Belgian painter P.P. Rubens and reach the Our Lady’s Cathedral. It is the largest Gothic cathedral in Belgium and a major landmark of Antwerp. Inside, it contains some of world's greatest Rubens paintings, Elevation of the Cross and The descent of The Cross. Many people have already visited the cathedral, but few of them have been accorded the privilege of taking a peek "behind the scenes". During your visit, you will climb to the top of the small tower to learn more about its history.
Then, follow your guide to the "Paleis op de Meir" where you will have the opportunity to visit one of the stores of world-famous chocolatier Dominique Persoone. Take some time to explore the enormous offer of chocolates. You can even take a peek in the “kitchen”. If you’re lucky, one of the chocolatiers may even be working on a new chocolate experiment.

After a 75-minute drive on the Belgian highway, you will arrive at Belgium's capital, Brussels.
Your panoramic drive will take you on a tour passing the King Boudewijn Stadium (Belgium's national sport stadium) and the Centenaire (exhibition halls built to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Belgium), and will pause at the Atomium statue for a photo stop. The Atomium statue was built for the 1958 World’s Fair, hosted in Brussels, and represents an iron molecule.
Next, your coach will lead you to the centre of the city passing the Chinese Pavillion, the Japanese Tower and the Royal Castle of Laeken (the residence of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde).
Your walking tour will start near the Central Station where you walk through the Old Town area to first admire the St. Hubert's Gallery, with its arcade of shops, and the rue des Bouchers, or Butchers' Street, with its plethora of restaurants and cafes. Ghent & canal cruise
This dynamic modern city has a centre straight out of the Middle Ages. It was weavers from Ghent, joined by others from Bruges, who took up arms to defeat the French in 1302.
Arrive at the centre of the medieval city of Ghent, where you begin your walking tour at St. Michael's Bridge, with its view of Ghent's three glorious medieval steeples. The closest is that of the early Gothic St. Nicholas Church. Behind is the Belfry dating from 1314 and in the background rises the honey-coloured tower of St. Bavo's Cathedral.
Your guide will lead you to the pontoon where you will board a canal boat for a fun and thorough exploration of the city. As you cruise through the historic city see highlights such as the impressive Castle of the Counts, the Fish Market, 13th century Monasteries and the ancient port of Ghent along with its mercantile houses.

Bruges (or Brugge in Flemish) is an exquisitely preserved medieval town. It had the good fortune to be linked with the sea by a navigable waterway, therefore the city became a leading member of the Hanseatic League in the 13th century, when the town established Europe's first stock exchange.
Upon arrival in Bruges a guided walk through the historical centre will introduce you to this beautiful, romantic city. During the walk, your guide will point out major sights such as the Market Square with its Guild houses and the Belfry Tower.
The Stadhuis, or Town Hall, dating from the 14th century, has a wonderfully ornate facade covered with statues, and the Oude Griffe, the former Recorder's House from the 1530's, is ornamented with impressive windows. Pass the Chapel of the Holy Blood.

From the pier, board your coach with your local guide for an hour and a half minute journey to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck passing through the Northern German countryside.
Upon arrival in Lubeck meet your local guide and start your walking tour through the charming medieval old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your first stop will be the impressive Holsten Gate, a relic of the old medieval fortifications that protected the city’s border then you will take a stroll through Lübeck’s romantic alleys and courtyards that extends like a labyrinth though the historical center. Dive into the history of one of the most famous aspects of industrial heritage in the Netherland: the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal, one of the country’s many inventions to fight rising water levels.
After an hour’s drive, you will see from afar the 60-metre (200-foot) high chimney of the Wouda Pumping Station, one of the most beautiful and innovative monuments in the Netherlands. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this magnificent building inspired by the Amsterdam School style has no shortage of superlatives: the largest steam-pumping station ever built and the only one in the world still in operation.
Constructed in 1920 to pump excess water out of Friesland, a frequently flooded region each winter, the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal can pump over 4,000 cubic metres of water per minute, which means around 6 million m³ of water per day: this is a real technical feat. Amsterdam sightseeing & canal cruise
This combination tour offers an excellent overview of the city, famous for its canals and gabled houses.
Depart by coach from the pier to Amsterdam and go for a guided walk through the center of Amsterdam.
You will walk past the Baroque-style Royal Palace, built on 13,695 pilings sunk into marshy soil. Upon its completion in 1655, it was hailed as an "Eighth Wonder of the World."
Towers and steeples are among Amsterdam's loveliest features. You will pass the Munttoren (Mint Tower), with a clock and bells that still seem to mirror the Golden Age. You will also pass by the Flower Market and the Beguinage before heading to the canal boat pontoon.
As many sights are only accessible from the water, a tour of Amsterdam would not be complete without a scenic cruise along the city's canals. From the pier, board your coach for a 30 min transfer to the Van Gogh Museum.
Your guided visit to the Van Gogh Museum is a unique experience. The Museum features the largest Van Gogh collection in the world, including 200 paintings, 400 drawings, and 700 letters by Amsterdam’s native son. The main exhibition chronicles the various phases of Van Gogh’s life, and features famous works such as The Potato Eaters, Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette, Bedroom in Arles, and Sunflowers.
The museum was founded in part by the widow of Vincent’s brother, Theo, who inherited her husband’s collection after his death. Johanna Van Gogh-Bonger dedicated the latter part of her life to promoting Vincent’s work through sales, exhibitions, and the publication of his letters. Johanna’s son continued her work after her death, and the Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973. In September 2013, the museum unveiled the long-lost Van Gogh painting Sunset at Montmajour, which spent years in a Norwegian attic, believed to be by another painter. It is the first full-size canvas by him discovered since 1928.

Rural Holland
On this tour you will pass many beautiful Dutch farms on your way to the very authentic Dutch village of "Broek in Waterland", known for its typical wooden houses and farms. After a stroll through the fairy-tale-like community, proceed to the "Beemsterpolder" (the Beemster lowland), registered on UNESCO's world heritage list.
Drive through the beautiful lowlands North of Amsterdam to the highlight of the tour, an original 17th century windmill, used to reclaim this area. Here you will learn how the Dutch manage to live below sea level. A short film provides insight in 300 years of wind drainage, followed by an independent visit to the mill, during which you will have the opportunity to buy some small souvenirs as a memento of your visit.

Start your scenic tour in the direction of the Cogels Osylei, Belgium's most important 'Art Nouveau style' street where you will make a short guided walk. Here you can find such a rare diversity of styles that the area has become an architectural curiosity of international fame.
Afterwards, you will head north to admire the Central Railway Station. Dubbed the 'Railway Cathedral', it is one of the world's most impressive railway stations and one of the main landmarks in Antwerp. The railway station was built between 1895 and 1905. An extensive restoration, which started in 1993 was completed 16 years later in 2009. Today the whole complex is over 400 metres long and has two entrances. There are three levels of tracks and a shopping centre which includes a diamond gallery with more than 30 diamond shops.
Continue your sightseeing tour of Antwerp driving by the MAS Museum and the 'Havenhuis' (Port House). MAS Architects, Neutelings and Riedijk, alternated between red sandstone from India and glass panes to give this riverfront museum a distinctive look that's both modern but also recalls the 16th century store house used in Antwerp's Old Port. The connection to the city is in the details as well. If you look closely at the 203-foot-tall building, you will see 3,185 silver hands, the symbol of Antwerp. Dame Zaha Hadid is the genius behind the brand new 'Havenhuis', home to the port of Antwerp. This intriguing piece of architecture is a combination of an old fire station and a modern glass construction that mimics the waves of the river Scheldt.
Then, your coach will drop you near the cruise terminal where your guided walking tour starts. Discover the old town section surrounding the marketplace with the Town Hall, gabled guild houses, cafes and Brabo statue. Then walk one block to the Vlaaikensgang ('Pie Alley'), typical of medieval Antwerp. Walk one more block to Our Lady’s Cathedral for an inside visit. From the pier, meet your local guide and start your exploration of the secrets of Antwerp by foot.
On your guided walk through the city, your guide will lead you to the MAS Museum, Antwerp’s landmark in the heart of the historic Docklands port district. The 60 metre high MAS tower will afford you the opportunity to take in Antwerp’s skyline from the roof terrace.
Continue your guided walk through the historic city centre, passing highlights such as Meat House, Market Square & Plantin-Moretus Museum. Walk by the Groenplaats with its statue of the famous Belgian painter P.P. Rubens and reach the Our Lady’s Cathedral. It is the largest Gothic cathedral in Belgium and a major landmark of Antwerp. Inside, it contains some of world's greatest Rubens paintings, Elevation of the Cross and The descent of The Cross. Many people have already visited the cathedral, but few of them have been accorded the privilege of taking a peek "behind the scenes". During your visit, you will climb to the top of the small tower to learn more about its history.
Then, follow your guide to the "Paleis op de Meir" where you will have the opportunity to visit one of the stores of world-famous chocolatier Dominique Persoone. Take some time to explore the enormous offer of chocolates. You can even take a peek in the “kitchen”. If you’re lucky, one of the chocolatiers may even be working on a new chocolate experiment.

After a 75-minute drive on the Belgian highway, you will arrive at Belgium's capital, Brussels.
Your panoramic drive will take you on a tour passing the King Boudewijn Stadium (Belgium's national sport stadium) and the Centenaire (exhibition halls built to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Belgium), and will pause at the Atomium statue for a photo stop. The Atomium statue was built for the 1958 World’s Fair, hosted in Brussels, and represents an iron molecule.
Next, your coach will lead you to the centre of the city passing the Chinese Pavillion, the Japanese Tower and the Royal Castle of Laeken (the residence of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde).
Your walking tour will start near the Central Station where you walk through the Old Town area to first admire the St. Hubert's Gallery, with its arcade of shops, and the rue des Bouchers, or Butchers' Street, with its plethora of restaurants and cafes. Ghent & canal cruise
This dynamic modern city has a centre straight out of the Middle Ages. It was weavers from Ghent, joined by others from Bruges, who took up arms to defeat the French in 1302.
Arrive at the centre of the medieval city of Ghent, where you begin your walking tour at St. Michael's Bridge, with its view of Ghent's three glorious medieval steeples. The closest is that of the early Gothic St. Nicholas Church. Behind is the Belfry dating from 1314 and in the background rises the honey-coloured tower of St. Bavo's Cathedral.
Your guide will lead you to the pontoon where you will board a canal boat for a fun and thorough exploration of the city. As you cruise through the historic city see highlights such as the impressive Castle of the Counts, the Fish Market, 13th century Monasteries and the ancient port of Ghent along with its mercantile houses.

Bruges (or Brugge in Flemish) is an exquisitely preserved medieval town. It had the good fortune to be linked with the sea by a navigable waterway, therefore the city became a leading member of the Hanseatic League in the 13th century, when the town established Europe's first stock exchange.
Upon arrival in Bruges a guided walk through the historical centre will introduce you to this beautiful, romantic city. During the walk, your guide will point out major sights such as the Market Square with its Guild houses and the Belfry Tower.
The Stadhuis, or Town Hall, dating from the 14th century, has a wonderfully ornate facade covered with statues, and the Oude Griffe, the former Recorder's House from the 1530's, is ornamented with impressive windows. Pass the Chapel of the Holy Blood.

The Flemish city of Ghent was considered the most powerful next to Paris in the 16th century and was an important medieval and Renaissance art centre. The past seems to still be alive, and you can enjoy these magnificent views during a walk in the heart of the city.
