The second largest city in Germany, located at the mouth of the Elbe River, Hamburg is the setting for incredibly port activity. Indeed, the port of Hamburg deserves a visit in its own right, particularly for its spectacular Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus districts, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These brick-fronted warehouse are testimony to the industrial architecture that arose from international trade in the early 20th Century. The city is surrounded by water and the Alster River forms a veritable inland lake, offering a pleasant place for a walk. Do not miss the emblem of the 1 200 years of history in this city – the Baroque Saint Michael’s church. Its high tower, nicknamed “Michel” by the locals, offers a fantastic view from the top of the bell tower.
