Founded in the 12th century B.C., Amasra owes its name to the Persian princess Amastris, who brought the town prosperity by having temples, an agora and an acropolis built. Today, this charming Black Sea town, whose promontory is divided into two islets jutting out into the sea, exudes calm and serenity. This port of call is the departure point for exploring Safranbolu, an Ottoman town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its incredible architecture. The name Safranbolu is derived from ‘saffron’, the local spice produced here. The town owes its historical importance to its strategic position along the main East-West caravan route from the 13th century.
