Use of LS MGO: a further step towards minimising the environmental footprint

For 30 years, PONANT has placed the environment at the heart of its priorities and adopted a number of initiatives to ensure its protection. Now, the company has taken the decision to totally eliminate the use of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and replace it with LS MGO (LS MGO), a hydrocarbon fuel obtained from the refining of crude oil and containing fewer pollutants, notably sulphur and fine particulate matter.

This ambitious approach has been applied to the entire fleet since 1st January 2019, and underlines the company’s commitment to the environment, going beyond the requirements of current regulations and anticipating future ones.

In 2020, the law will require the use of fuels with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5%. Here the company is setting the example, not only by implementing the law requiring the use of less polluting fuels a year before it comes into force, but also by exceeding the requirements of the legislation, using a fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.1%.
