Portugal’s capital city located on the banks of the Tagus, only a few kilometres from the Atlantic coast, is a city of exceptionally rich cultural diversity. At the mouth of the river harbour, impose two UNESCO World Heritage monuments, Jeronimos monastery and Belem tower. The Alfama hillside is also worth visiting: known for its fado bars and its Moorish streets, this district is the oldest one of the city and one of the most typical. Not far from there, Chiado’s elegant streets are home to big fashion labels and are an invitation to a bit of of luxury shopping.

Located at the mouth of the Douro River, the port of Leixões lies less than 10 kilometres from Porto. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic centre of Porto is worth a visit for its famous Ribeira district, the metallic silhouette of the Dom-Luis bridge looming over its ancient houses, its richly decorated Baroque churches and its national Soares dos Reis museum. The São Bento station is also interesting for its typically Portuguese decoration, using Azulejos, blue square ceramic tiles decorated with geometric patterns or figurative scenes.

During your day at sea, make the most of the many services and activities on board. Treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the spa or stay in shape in the fitness centre. Depending on the season, let yourself be tempted by the swimming pool or a spot of sunbathing. This day without a port of call will also be an opportunity to enjoy the conferences or shows proposed on board, to do some shopping in the boutique or to meet the PONANT photographers in their dedicated space. Bilbao, capital of the Spanish Basque country, is one of the most avant-garde cities in Europe. Its architectural audacity as well as its ancient built heritage will take you on a journey between traditions and innovations. An unusual cable car will allow you to reach the magnificent Guggenheim Museum, a unique construction of stone, glass and titanium, designed by the architect Frank Gehry and home to a collection of modern art and contemporary monumental sculpture. The narrow streets of the old city and the unmissable Ensanche district are also worthy of a visit, as is the Vizcaya bridge, the world’s first ever transporter bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discover Pauillac, a town in southwestern France located a few kilometres away from Bordeaux, stretching along the Gironde. This stop will be a voyage of myriad flavours, particularly during the tasting of the region’s wines, revealing their soft ruby colours and reflections turning amber with time. A small crescent of land, 3 kilometres long, the Île d’Aix is a fragile area listed as an outstanding natural site. The use of cars here is restricted, thereby enabling nature to reign supreme. Set off to discover the treasures of the island by using the “sentier des douaniers” (Customs officer path). Between marshes, vines, creeks and cliffs, you will quickly become aware of this stretch of land’s exceptional heritage. This enchanting place invites you to visit its village and its museums, the Napoléon Museum or the African Museum. A fine diversity of landscapes of small pastel-coloured houses adorned with multi-coloured shutters and hollyhocks… It’s just like a postcard.

Rebuilt after the bombings of the Second World War, Lorient is known as the town of five ports: the military port (the Keroman submarine base is designed to hold twenty or so submarines and their crew), a pleasure port, a fishing port which is the second largest in France, a commercial port and a passenger port. There are two unmissable visits: the museum space dedicated to submarines, home to a submarine named Flore and located in the former German military base, and the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly, an interactive sailing museum about yachting and the great sea races. Let yourself fall under the charm of the view from the Port-Louis citadel and the quays, evoking the prosperous past of this Breton town, coloured with silks and spices.

The use of drones on land in the Arctic and Antarctic regions is also strictly forbidden by international polar regulations. In other regions, it may be possible to use drones on land if permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities of each country and each region travelled through, as well as a pilot’s licence that should be obtained from your home country. Passengers are responsible for obtaining these permits; they should be able to present them at all times. Passengers who do not obtain these authorisations expose themselves to the risk of legal proceedings.

Cultural advisor and historian, Jean Gérard Bosio became involved at a very young age in culture, the arts and diplomacy, alongside illustrious figures including Edgar Faure, Georges Pompidou, Léopold Senghor and Louis Aragon. Due to his missions for states and international organisations, he travels the world as a diplomat, expert, museographer, curator and publisher. Working with top experts, he designed and ran the Musée Dynamique programmes; inaugurated the Fonds Muséographique and its exhibitions in 2006 for a Léopold Senghor Museum; and launched the universal P.A.L. education programme in 1998. Created with Léopold Senghor, René Cassin and the United Nations to promote Peace Art and Liberty, it brought together 100 artists from across the world to support and illustrate the Universal Declaration. Through his personal connections and work with great artists, he has been behind many major exhibitions including for Chagall, Picasso, Masson and Soulages, as well as the essential Arts.
In creating this “Art and Sea” programme with his support, PONANT offers all the emotions generated when sea meets art, with major works of art on display and conferences.

Manager of Le Cinq, the Michelin-starred restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris, Éric Beaumard is also one of the best sommeliers in the world. Voted Best Sommelier in France in 1992, Best Sommelier in Europe with the Ruinard Trophy in 1994 and Sommelier of the Year by the magazine Le Chef in 2003, he also held the title of Vice-Champion of the World in the Best Sommelier contest in 1998. In April 2018, he was awarded French Légion d’honneur by M. François Pinault.
Éric Beaumard has been very involved in purchasing wine for the hotel since its opening: every month he visits a vineyard in France or Europe. He is extremely knowledgeable and is widely recognised by a Parisian clientele that is both French and international. He loves to share his passion for wine and is never at a loss when it comes to giving wise advice on the best vintage to accompany a dish.
However, he was by no means predestined for this successful sommelier career. As a student he thought of becoming a cook, until a motorbike accident left him temporarily without the use of his right arm. After his recovery he worked as a chef for six months at the Maisons de Bricourt in Cancale, before turning to wine and the sommelier profession on the advice of Chef Olivier Roellinger. A new passion and a new talent were born.

Bernard Antony, whose business operates in Vieux-Ferrette (Alsace), is one of the most renowned cheese ripeners in the world. His Alsace cellar plays host to a high-end international clientele. Prince Albert of Monaco and Archduke Otto of Austria have both been known to visit his boutique. Today, nineteen 3-star Michelin restaurants entrust Antony with their cheese board selection. Prominent French chefs from Alain Ducasse to Pierre Gagnaire are among those keen to access these heavenly cheeses, as are the major vineyards which use the services of this master cheese ripener in Vieux-Ferrette.

A graduate with a PhD on “France Atlantic coastal nature management”, Alain Miossec is an expert on the sea and coasts. He has written several books on the subject (Les littoraux entre nature et aménagement, SEDES 1998, 3 éditions), a dictionary of the sea and coasts (Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2012), Géographie des mers et des océans (PU Rennes 2014) and dozens of articles.
Since retiring in 2011, Alain Miossec has turned his attention and talent to cultural issues and now teaches wine at Nantes University.
His latest publications are about cuisine associated with the sea, particularly his latest work coedited with Jean Robert Pitte, La mer nourricière, un défi millénaire (gastronomy of the sea and managing resources).

A world-renowned pastry chef, Cédric Grolet is the undisputed master of his art. He joined Le Meurice in 2012 after years spent refining his pastry, chocolate and ice cream making skills. Several awards later, including ‘Best Pastry Chef of the Year’ (Le Chef, 2015), ‘Best Pastry Chef’ (Gault & Millau, 2017) and ‘World’s Best Pastry Chef 2018’ (The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards), he is now the creative force and brains behind our legendary pastries and desserts. Cédric invites you into his fantastical magical world where even the fruits are not quite what they seem!

Born in the Auvergne, Jocelyn Herland worked with Alain Ducasse for many years. From 1997 to 2000, he was a chef de partie in the Alain Ducasse Restaurant at 59 Avenue Poincaré (three Michelin stars). He then became a chef de partie at the Opéra Restaurant in the Paris Intercontinental Hotel (one Michelin star) then sous-chef at the Royal Monceau. In December 2003, when Alain Ducasse appointed Christophe Moret as Executive Chef for the Alain Ducasse Restaurant in Plaza Athénée in Paris, Jocelyn Herland joined him as sous-chef before being promoted to Assistant Chef.
In 2007, Jocelyn Herland was made Executive Chef at The Dorchester Alain Ducasse restaurant (three Michelin stars) in London, before moving to Le Meurice as Executive Chef in January 2016. Throughout his career, he has been influenced by the Alain Ducasse philosophy of always using seasonal produce selected for freshness, quality and provenance, which is at the heart of one of the world’s finest cuisines.
